The Real Estate Market in West Algarve

The Real Estate Market in West Algarve

For decades the Algarve has been one of the most popular destinations in Europe for fun-packed sunshine holidays and many ex-patriates have made their home here, particularly in and around the busy resorts of Faro, Vilamoura and Albufeira.

But head further West and you will discover a more unspoilt side of the Algarve. Beyond Albufeira, attractive resorts such
as Castelo, Gale, Vale de Parra, Guia and Carvoeiro all have a charm of their own. At the quaint fishing town of Portimao,
the road twists north and ascends into the hills of the Serra de Monchique, with their profusion of green pines, chestnut trees and eucalyptus forests. The rugged coastline continues past the Moorish town of Lagos to reach the amazing cliff formations at Ponta da Piedade, and goes on to cradle the tranquil, whitewashed fishing villages of Burgau and Salema, then culminates dramatically where the majestic Sagres Point and Cape St Vincent jut out into the wild Atlantic. Stretching north from here, the Costa Vicentina is an area of national parkland so unspoilt that tourism hardly registers on its monitor. Here, beaches are often unsignposted and hidden from the road and inland, dirt tracks fit only for donkeys trail off into the hills, as birds of prey soar overhead.

Despite the credit crunch, owning a second home in the Algarve is still a real possibility and a worthwhile investment, with
growth in tourism remaining buoyant and returns from some holiday rentals proving consistently higher than in any other European country. The luxury purpose-built holiday complexes around Faro, Vilamoura and Albufeira have remained a popular choice for investors, particularly for their world-class golfing facilities. But recent plans to invest in a multi-million pound tourism and sports complex and an international racing circuit close to Portimao have really put the Western Algarve on the map. The new motorway from Faro has cut the journey time from the airport by half, but as if this were not enough, plans to build a new airport at Portimao have just been given the go-ahead, and this is expected to attract the attention of low-cost carriers in the coming years. New residential developments have been springing up in readiness for a sharp increase in property demand.

The Algarve is just a two hour flight from the UK and with cheap flights to Faro available from all major UK airports with all the well-known budget airlines, this 100 mile stretch of sun-soaked coastline is now more accessible than ever. Buying an investment property abroad is never a decision to be taken lightly, so it`s advisable to take a few trips out to appreciate all the region has to offer before taking the plunge. Renting an apartment in one of the main tourist centres of Albufeira, Portimao or Lagos and hiring a car will allow you all the freedom you need to explore your surroundings. Alternatively, many real estate agencies can arrange short viewing trips with accommodation thrown in.
